If Cybersecurity Protects Technology, Who Protects You?

I searched “privacy expert” online, and most of what came back was cybersecurity.

It made me wonder how someone who needs privacy to protect themselves and their family is supposed to find a human privacy expert.

Someone who deals with the human side of privacy. Nothing to do with programs, VPNs, software, or whatever else keeps your computer safe.

When I am out socially, I usually avoid talking about what I do for a living.

Sometimes I say I was a house painter. Other times I say I am a retired postman from Tenafly, New Jersey.

That usually moves people away from the conversation, which I prefer.

When I do say privacy expert, the next question is almost always technical. Something about protecting systems, devices, or networks.

Cyber experts no doubt have an important purpose.

But if you are looking for personal privacy, you need someone who deals with human privacy.

That is my expertise.

I look into a client’s life and find the vulnerabilities that could lead to an unwanted person showing up at their door.

In reality, you are only private until that happens.

You may have protected the technology while overlooking the one piece of information that connects your business life to your home life.

That is the difference.

I explain more about this in Human Privacy: When Technology Is Not the Real Threat.

My Disappear Privacy work is built around looking at the person, their lifestyle, their connections, and the simple things that may expose where they live or how they can be found.

Before working in privacy, I was a skip tracer. My job was finding people who did not want to be found.

Today I reverse that experience and help people understand how their life can be found, connected, and exposed.

I work with the human side of privacy.
