The mistake is refusing to pay outright or reacting emotionally. Instead, slow the situation down. Tell the blackmailer you need time. Explain that you have to borrow the money or find a way to get it.
Then, when the promised day arrives, have a believable reason why you need a little more time.
The victim lives with the hope of avoiding exposure.
The blackmailer lives with the hope of getting paid.
That is where your leverage begins.
The goal is not to win an argument.
The goal is to stay in control long enough to find the best solution.
