The scammer builds a relationship, creates emotional dependency, and slowly isolates the victim from logic. By the time money is requested, many people are emotionally invested and willing to ignore obvious warning signs.

Here are four ways to identify a romance scam before it becomes a financial or privacy disaster.

Demand a Live Video Call

A genuine person has little reason to avoid a brief live conversation.

Scammers almost always have an excuse:

Poor internet connection
Broken camera
Working overseas
“I’m too shy”
Bad timing because of work

One five-minute video call can expose weeks of deception. If someone repeatedly refuses to appear live, treat it as a serious warning sign.

Question the Perfect Job Story

Romance scammers often invent careers that explain why they can never meet.

Common examples include:

Offshore oil platforms
Military deployments
International aid organizations
Overseas engineering projects
International contractors

These professions create believable reasons for distance while setting the stage for future requests for money.

If every conversation ends with another excuse for why they can’t meet, assume you’re being manipulated.

Never Give Them Leverage

Money can be replaced.

Your privacy is much harder to recover.

Never send:

Bank transfers
Gift cards
Cryptocurrency
Passport or identification documents
Intimate photographs or videos
Sensitive personal information

Many romance scams eventually become blackmail once private material has been shared. The scammer’s goal is simple: create leverage and exploit it.

Separate Fantasy from Reality

If you’ve never spoken live or met in person, you don’t truly know who you’re dealing with.

A relationship exists between two verified people.

A scam exists between one real person and one invented identity.

Recognizing that difference early can save thousands of dollars, protect your reputation, and prevent months—or even years—of emotional damage.
