Romance scammers don’t rely on stupidity.
They rely on trust.
The Romance Scam Starts With Trust
First comes the emotional collapse: discovering the person you loved never existed.
The face.
The voice.
The future you imagined.
Manufactured.
Often the scammer is operating from Nigeria, the Ivory Coast, or another offshore fraud hub. By the time the truth hits, the money is already gone.
Savings.
Retirement funds.
Emergency accounts.
All transferred in the belief that love required patience.
For some victims, it gets worse.
When a Romance Scam Becomes Money Laundering
I’ve handled cases where women unknowingly became part of international money-laundering operations.
The scammer claims they can’t access their funds and asks the victim to receive money on their behalf through Western Union, direct bank transfers, or payment platforms.
The victim is told to forward the money, often converted into cryptocurrency.
What they don’t realize is that the money may be coming from other scam victims or blackmail cases.
When authorities trace the transfers, the trail leads to the woman who “helped.”
That’s when revenue services start calling.
Accounts get flagged.
Lives implode.
If you ever receive money from someone you only know online, you are in dangerous territory.
At that point, the issue is no longer romance.
It’s exposure.
Three Rules for Preventing Romance Scams
Here is the prevention reality, stripped of nonsense.
There are three rules in online dating:
Never send money to someone you haven’t met.
Never receive money from someone you haven’t met.
Never send compromising photos.
Break any one of those rules and the risk multiplies fast.
Demand a real video call.
Not a clip.
Not an excuse.
You need to see their face, watch their lips move, and hold a live conversation.
Oil rigs.
Combat zones.
Broken cameras.
Shyness.
Those are scripts.
If they continually refuse a genuine live conversation, something is wrong.
AI Makes Romance Scams More Difficult to Detect
Even video is no longer absolute proof.
Videos can be stolen.
Staged.
Manipulated.
AI-generated.
A face on a screen should not override everything else that doesn’t make sense.
Listen to the story.
Question the emergencies.
Question why money keeps entering the relationship.
And pay attention when someone you’ve never met needs you to become part of their financial life.

When Romance Scams Become Blackmail
Never send compromising photographs.
That’s one of the easiest ways for a romance scam to become blackmail.
But photographs aren’t the only danger.
For married women, private messages alone can create enormous leverage.
The scammer may threaten to contact your husband.
Your family.
Your employer.
Your friends.
They know the fear of exposure can be more powerful than the original romance scam.
If that happens, the problem has changed.
You are no longer simply trying to determine whether someone is a scammer.
You are being threatened.
