I was a skip tracer before I protected people. In case you do not know, a skip tracer is someone who finds people.
I began working as a skip tracer in 1984, in a small pink office on 25th Street in New York City. My specialty was locating people who were extremely difficult to find. When a private investigator, lawyer, insurance company, or tablood could not find someone, they came to me.
I searched worldwide for missing individuals, celebrities, financial criminals, debtors, witnesses, and people who believed they had disappeared.
Finding someone was never simply a matter of checking an address. It required understanding how people live, where information is located, what companies know, what family members reveal, and how one small detail can lead to another.
Everyone leaves behind on piece or another.
The work taught me that something is always somewhere.
More importantly, everything is connected.
Most people do not understand how to disconnect their lives from their information.
It made me question whether privacy truly exists at all.
I Found People Others Could Not Find
A real skip tracer does not rely on databases.
I went where the information was stored.
Phone companies. Banks. Airlines. Utilities.
I grabbed old phone numbers, call records, and forwarding addresses.
Employment information. Social Security numbers. Family contacts.
It all leads somewhere.
I searched for assets, false information, and people who thought they were hidden on the other side of the world.
That experience became the foundation of everything I do today.
To protect someone’s identity, you first have to understand how that identity can be found by another human.
I Was a Social Engineer
Back then, we called it social engineering, pretexting, and gagging.
Pick up the phone and convince the other party you need the information.
Be it as phone repair, a bank manager, or the customer.
Pretexting was the core of my services.
I understood how to speak with employees, companies, institutions, and government organizations. I knew how to ask questions, create trust, and recognize when someone was about to reveal more than they intended.
The fine art of lying for a living.
I loved the work. It was a rush.
My ability to social engineer made me a deadly skip tracer.
You did not want your name coming across my desk.
The greatest privacy weakness is not technology.
It is human behavior.
How to Disappear
The skip tracing business changed.
Privacy laws became more restrictive.
Technology was becoming part of our lives.
I met a man in a bookstore who needed to disappear.
Then I wrote an article that blew up online.
That led to the How to Disappear book.
Here I am today, still teaching people how to disappear from their old lives.
I do not use fake or false identities. Most people could not pull that off.
I reverse engineer the idea of skip tracing.
I teach clients how to live as a disappeared person.
My clients have real problems.
They are not running from the law.
Maybe they got involved with the wrong company in business.
Maybe they came into money and want to start over in life.
I see disappearing as reinvention.
We all have the right to start over somewhere.
From Finding People to Human Privacy
The idea and act of “how to disappear” is not about technology.
Creating extreme privacy for protection is not technical either.
The reason I say this is because it is an unwanted human who shows up at your door. Not a software program, algorithm, or AI.
Ninety-nine percent of the clients I take on with my extreme privacy service completely overlook the human aspect of their privacy.
Something as simple as having their contact number on a utility account.
Or an insurance policy connected to their home address.
You might think these things are small in the grand scheme of things, but these are the things that can lead to the unwanted knock on your door.
Romance Scams Changed the Work Again
One day, I got an email from a woman who was the victim of a romance scam.
She did not want me to find the scammer. She wanted me to find the man in the photos that had been used.
She was in love with him and wanted to connect.
Using my skip tracing skills, I located him.
However, he was not interested in connecting with her, so she moved on.
That led me into romance scam work, where criminals pose as other men online, connect with women, and swindle them out of money.
Love scams are harsh, and they can truly destroy a person.
First comes the heartbreak of realizing you were duped.
Then comes the realization that you may have sent that person your life savings.
A quick tip: if you met someone online and you have not had a live video call with them, they are probably a romance scammer.
That work led me to write The Romance Detective and The Online Dating Journal.

I Became the Blackmail Fixer
Over time, my work moved deeper into blackmail, exposure threats, protecting secret lives and extreme private crises.
I became known as The Blackmail Fixer.
My blackmail work involves situations where exposure will affect a marriage, family, career, business, reputation, or private life.
The cases involve Grindr, Sniffies, Ashley Madison, Sugar Daddy, escorts, secret relationships, romance scams, social media, executives, professionals, or people whose private life is suddenly being used against them.
I step in, and take over to prevent exposure.
The blackmailer is moved away from the client’s contact and onto one controlled by me. I then deal with the threat directly, stall the demands, prevent exposure, and protect my client’s identity.

Everything in My Career Connects
My work today did not appear overnight.
Skip tracing taught me how people are found.
Social engineering taught me how information is extracted.
Disappearance work taught me how identities can be separated and protected.
Romance-scam work taught me how emotion can distort judgment.
Blackmail work taught me how fear changes behavior.
All of those experiences connect.
That is the foundation of the work I do today.

I have spoken for Paperjam in Luxembourg, think tanks in Germany, privacy seminars in London, Mystery Writers of America, Romance Writers, Princeton University, a telecommunications organization in Baden-Baden, and a law enforcement group in New Jersey, along with other conferences and events.
The subjects have changed with my career: skip tracing, social engineering, privacy, disappearing, finding people, and understanding the information people unknowingly leave behind.
I was even invited to speak at Oxford. I turned it down. They wanted me to wear a tuxedo.
