Why Won’t My Online Boyfriend Video Call Me?

Are you asking yourself, “Why won’t my online boyfriend video call me?”

Has he made excuses? His mobile camera is broken. His job does not allow video calls. The service is bad where he lives. Every time you suggest a call, something happens.

One failed call is one thing. A pattern of excuses is another.

If it sounds wrong, pay attention to that feeling.

In roughly 99% of the cases where women have hired me to check whether an online boyfriend was fake, they had never had a live video call with him.

Why Does He Keep Avoiding the Camera?

A man may send photographs, voice messages, and even videos of himself. None of those is the same as speaking with you live, answering your questions, and responding naturally in the moment.

You do not need an elaborate test. Ask for a five-minute live video conversation at a reasonable time.

If he claims to love you but repeatedly refuses to show his face and speak with you, ask yourself why you are expected to trust him with your feelings—or your money—when he will not do that.

Do Not Send Him Money

Never send money to someone you met online when you cannot verify who they are.

There may be an emergency, a business problem, a frozen account, travel expenses, or a reason he cannot visit you. The story can change. The request for money continues.

If you send money to a romance scammer, getting it back can be difficult. The better decision is to stop before another payment leaves your account.

A live call alone does not prove every part of his story is true. But someone who continually avoids one gives you a serious reason to question the relationship.

When It Is Time to Walk Away

If he refuses a live call again and again, you do not have to keep waiting. You can end the relationship and move on.

If he has begun threatening you with photographs, messages, or exposure, the situation is different. Do not make a sudden decision out of fear. Read my Romance Scam Help page so you understand the threat before changing communication.

About Frank M. Ahearn

I began my career as a skip tracer and social engineer in 1984. My job was finding people and checking the information they gave others.

Later, I reversed that work and began helping people protect their identities and disappear.

Today, I help women question online relationships before more money, private information, or emotion is lost. I search and verify what can be checked about the person and the story. If the relationship turns into blackmail, I take over the communication and work to prevent exposure.

I am the New York Times bestselling author of How to Disappear and the author of two books about online dating and romance scammers.

Books About Online Dating and Romance Scams

The Romance Detective: How to Tell If He’s a Jerk, Creep, Scammer — or Married explains how to question an online identity and recognize inconsistencies before you trust the person behind it.

The Online Dating Journal: How to Identify Online Dating Red Flags and Avoid Romance Scammers, Married Men & Creeps gives you questions to work through while you examine an online relationship.
