Victims are usually freaking out and tell me, “They know everything. They know my wife, my job, my Facebook friends.” Sometimes they do. Sometimes they do not.
There is a difference between a blackmailer saying, “I will contact your wife,” and saying, “I will contact your wife, Tanya.” There is a difference between saying, “I will expose you at work,” and sending you a screenshot of your company website or the name of your boss. The same goes for social media. “I will send this to your Instagram followers” is a threat. Sending you a screenshot showing your actual followers proves they found something.
Blackmailers lie and sometimes they bluff. They know victims are scared and will often fill in the missing pieces themselves.
When the Blackmailer Does Not Know Your Identity
When I discover that a Grindr blackmailer does not have my client’s real identity, that can give me an opportunity. This is where disinformation sometimes comes into play.
Instead of allowing the blackmailer to continue searching for my client’s real social media, family, or employment, I may be able to change what they believe they found. In some cases, I can create information that leads them away from the client.
If the blackmailer believes the information is real, the threat can move toward information I control instead of the client’s actual life. That can contain the threat.
It does not work in every case. The opportunity has to be there. But when the blackmailer has very little real information, I do not want to sit around and give them time to find more.
Why Disinformation Can Matter
The problem is not only what happens today. Even after the money demands stop, you do not want to spend the next several months wondering whether the blackmailer is still searching for your identity, wife, employer, or social media.
That is why I want to know what they have from the beginning. If they already know everything, I deal with that situation. If they know very little, I deal with that situation differently.
Blackmail is not one-size-fits-all. What matters is what the predator has and what opportunities exist to keep the threat from spreading.
